Fact #2 of 6

Shingles can happen to anyone who’s had chickenpox.

Because 98% of adults in the United States have had chickenpox, most adults are at risk.
Fact #3 of 6

The rash isn’t always the first sign of Shingles.

There may be signs that the Shingles rash is coming before it ever appears on the skin. You may feel itching, tingling, burning, or pain in a specific area on one side of your body or face. This sensation may last from 2 to 3 days.
Fact #4 of 6

Shingles can be a painful, blistering rash that can last up to 30 days.

There’s no way to predict when the Shingles rash will erupt or how severe the outbreak will be.
Fact #5 of 6

1 in every 4 people who get Shingles will experience 1 or more complications.

Some people may experience complications that last after the rash has healed. For instance, permanent scarring, changes to the color of the skin, or nerve pain that can last for months or even years. In very rare cases, loss of hearing or vision impairment can occur when Shingles involves the ear or eye, respectively.
Fact #6 of 6

The Shingles rash can bring severe, stabbing pain.

In many cases, Shingles causes pain. People with Shingles have described the pain as sharp, stabbing, shooting, burning, and throbbing. The pain may be constant or it may come and go.
